8 Belly-Flattening Fruits and Veggies

Summer barbecues and pool parties often come with sodium-rich and difficult-to-digest foods that contribute to uncomfortable stomach bloat. To beat flatulence and help flatten your belly, load up on these eight nourishing fruits and veggies:

1. Coconut Water

Coconut water is rich in potassium, a flatulence-fighting mineral and electrolyte that aids in flushing sodium, which contributes to bloat, out of the body. Stick to coconut water that is naturally sweet and doesn't contain any added sugar.

2. Papaya

This tropical fruit contains a bloat-fighting enzyme called papain, which aids in breaking down proteins within the gastrointestinal area, facilitating digestion. In addition, papaya is loaded with potent antioxidants that reduce inflammation and fiber that contributes to a healthy digestive tract.

3. Watermelon

Watermelon is more than 90 percent water, so it's a natural bloat-beating diuretic that supports the body in releasing excess water and sodium. This juicy summertime staple is also loaded with amino acids and vitamins A, B-6 and C.

4. Cantaloupe

A rich source of cancer-fighting carotenoids, cantaloupes are also high in H20 and potassium. And they're full of immunity-boosting vitamin C and won't spike your blood sugar levels.

5. Pineapple

Pineapple packs in a load of potassium along with an enzyme called bromelain that supports protein digestion. For maximum digestive benefits, dig into the stem (not quite as delicious as the golden flesh, but very nourishing) where most of the bromelain is stored.

6. Asparagus

This anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich veggie is another powerful diuretic that aids in removing extra liquids from the body and helps to reduce unwanted bloat. Try cooking your asparagus to boost the benefits of its cancer-fighting antioxidants.

7. Cucumber

Not only will this water-rich veggie help you de-puff your peepers, it will also minimize any stomach bloat. Cucumbers work wonders when it comes to reducing puffiness and water retention in the body and are also abundant in vitamin C, silica (a trace mineral that functions as a bone strengthener) and caffeic acid (an anti-inflammatory organic compound stored in the skin). Chop up this crispy, refreshing veggie for a snack, or blend it into a hydrating smoothie.

8. Celery

Celery is another natural diuretic known for its assistance in relieving water retention. If nut butter and celery isn't your thing, juice it up or try it in a soup.

Healthy Low Carb Eating Plan

Carbohydrates should make up 45 to 65 percent of the average person's total daily calorie intake, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010. For someone consuming 2,000 calories a day, this is about 225 to 325 grams. Low-carb diets often recommend a daily carb intake ranging between 50 and 150 grams, although some are more restrictive and limit carbs to less than 20 grams a day, especially during the initial phases of weight loss. On a low-carb eating plan, you need to limit carbohydrate-rich foods such as grains, fruits, some dairy products, sugar beverages and desserts. Non-starchy vegetables, an adequate amount of protein and healthy fats should be the foundation of your diet.

Breakfast

To start your day off right on a healthy low-carb eating plan, toast, bagels and breakfast cereals are out of the question. Instead, scrambled eggs with onions, cheese, bacon and cherry tomatoes are perfect choices. If you want to switch it up, you can prepare a spinach and red bell pepper omelet with goat cheese or smoked salmon or turkey slices rolled with cream cheese and vegetables. Depending on your carbohydrate allowance, you can include choices containing slightly more carbohydrates, such as peanut butter mixed with cottage cheese and berries or a smoothie made with low-carb unsweetened almond milk, a little bit of coconut milk, a few berries and almond butter.

Lunch

Bringing your own lunch to work or school is the best strategy to help you stick to your low-carb eating plan. Salads are easy to make and a good way to help your meet your recommended vegetable intake. Prepare your salad with at least 1 to 2 cups of leafy greens and add other non-starchy vegetables, such as cucumber, tomatoes and green onions, to taste. Top your salad with 4 to 6 ounces of protein such as salmon, chicken, pork or beef. Alternatively, you can also add 2 to 3 hard-boiled eggs and 1 to 2 ounces of cheese. Add slices of avocado or a handful of nuts if you like. Drizzle your salad with extra-virgin olive oil and vinegar. All of these options are low in carb and provide you with an abundance of healthy nutrients.

Dinner

Your dinner should include non-starchy vegetables, a protein source and some fat. You can serve onions, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, bok choy, mushrooms or tomatoes, along with 4 to 6 ounces of protein from fish, seafood, poultry or meat. Cook your vegetables and protein with olive oil or add a drizzle of olive oil to your vegetables before serving to ensure you get enough healthy fat. Fat will help you feel satiated. You can also modify your favorite high-carb recipes into low-carb alternatives. For example, you can have low-carb pasta by replacing regular pasta with a low-carb variety or spaghetti squash. You can also prepare pizza on a low-carb tortilla or layer your pizza ingredients on slices of eggplants or on portabella mushroom caps. Ensure that you have enough vegetables, protein and fat combined at every dinner meal.

Snacks

If your meals are well balanced, you should not feel too hungry between meals. However, if you need healthy low-carb snack ideas to keep you going between meals, try 1 to 2 ounces of cheese, 1 to 2 ounces of nuts, 1 to 2 tablespoons of nut butter, a few slices of deli meat, raw vegetables or tuna salad.

Does Papaya Help Weight Loss?

If you're trying to lose weight, you probably already know that you need to take in fewer calories each day than you expend. However, this is often easier said than done, making the many diet aids available on the market tempting. Neither papaya nor papaya enzyme does much to promote weight loss, however.

Weight Loss

To lose the kind of weight you want -- presumably, you wish to lose body fat -- you need to force your body to burn the fat for energy. The cells burn stored fat whenever the number of calories you take in each day is less than the number your cells require to maintain function and fuel your activities. The two best ways to lose weight are to eat fewer calories and to burn more through increased activity.

Papaya

One of the common dietary aids rumored to help you lose weight is papaya. You might have heard that the fruit itself is helpful, or you may have heard that you should take papain, which is papaya enzyme, in supplement form. Neither papaya fruit nor papain can cause your cells to burn more fat, however. This is because papaya and papaya enzyme don't affect your metabolism, which is the rate at which your cells burn calories.

Papaya Enzymes

Papaya enzyme is the most common reason some people think papaya makes a good dietary aid. Unfortunately, there's simply no scientific proof to support the idea that papaya enzyme burns fat. Papain is actually a proteolytic, meaning it digests protein. In your body, however, it doesn't appear to do anything. This is because your acidic stomach breaks down the sensitive enzyme and destroys it. Further, proteolytic enzymes have no ability to affect metabolism, according to Drs. Reginald Garrett and Charles Grisham in their book "Biochemistry."

Considerations

There is one indirect way in which papaya can help you lose weight. If you consume papaya instead of other, more calorically dense foods, you will take in fewer calories and will consequently burn fat to make up the deficit. Papaya is full of both water and fiber, which not only benefit your digestive health, says Dr. Lauralee Sherwood in her book "Human Physiology," but also help you feel full longer.
