Foods to Eat When You Want to Burn Fat Fast

Many foods are conducive to weight loss and will help you lose weight and burn fat. You can increase your body’s fat-burning power by eating more foods that strengthen your body’s main fat-metabolizing organ, the liver, says Michelle Schoffro Cook, a best-selling author and doctor of natural medicine. Some foods require more calories to digest than they contain, and some foods boost your metabolism, letting you burn fat faster.

Meat

Lean chicken and turkey, salmon, tuna, lean beef and sardines top the list of the healthiest fat-burning meats. When you eat these high-protein foods, your body uses energy to digest them. In other words, calories and fat are burned up in the digestion process of high-protein foods. Protein is also good for muscle building, which increases metabolism.

Chiles

When you eat hot foods, like habaneros, cayenne chiles or jalapeƱo peppers, your body temperature increases. By creating heat, your metabolism speeds up and burns more calories in an effort to cool back down.

Green Tea

Green tea has molecular properties that make it conducive to weight loss. A key compound is epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, a powerful antioxidant that fires up your nervous system and helps your body burn more calories, especially when combined with caffeine.

Eggs

Eggs are loaded with protein, which, like meat, your body has to work hard to digest. According to Stephan Aschan of the Huffington Post, eggs are high in amino acids and lecithin, which increases your bile production. Bile is a fat emulsifier and absorbs fat in the small intestine. Make sure to eat eggs in moderation. A few eggs a week are fine.

Whole-Grain Bread, Cereal and Oatmeal

Whole grains are packed with fiber and complex carbohydrates that fill you up but don’t cause an insulin spike, so your body doesn't go into "fat storage" mode. Due to its fiber content, a single serving of whole-grain bread can be more filling than two servings of white bread. "Fiber also moves fat through our digestive system faster so that less of it is absorbed," according to the folks at Calories Per Hour.

Garlic and Onions

Minerals and oils inside garlic and onions break down fat and increase your metabolism. “This dynamic duo of foods contains phytochemicals that break down fatty deposits in the body,” according to Cook.

Beans and Legumes

Beans are high in protein, which helps your body build muscle and burn calories. They are also high in fiber, which may inhibit your body from absorbing fat. Stay away from baked and refried beans, and stick with kidney, lima, navy and white beans.

List of Natural Appetite Suppressing Foods

Eating too much of any food -- healthy or not -- will cause you to put on pounds. Even if you try to cut back, your appetite could undermine you and cause you to take in more calories than you need. You can naturally curb your desire to eat with foods you find right in your own kitchen. Know how to design meals to satisfy you with one serving, rather than several.

Fats for Fullness

Avocados, seeds and olive oil may be high in calories, but they have appetite-controlling qualities that make them a positive addition to your diet. A particular type of fatty acid, called oleic fatty acid, has the power to send hunger-curbing messages to the brain, according to what researchers determined in a study published in "Cell Metabolism" in 2008. In addition, Omega-3 fats, such as those found in salmon, can also suppress hunger by stimulating the release of a hormone called leptin.

Spicy Satiation

Cayenne pepper and other hot spices can squelch your appetite. They contain compounds called capsaicin and capsiate, which a study published in "Chemical Senses" in 2012 determined that these compounds help discourage hunger sensations. If you're not up for hot spice, however, consider using more ginger in your dishes, as ginger helped reduce hunger sensations when consumed as a hot drink between meals, reported a study published in "Metabolism" in 2012. Cinnamon, along with nutmeg and cloves, may also help reduce your appetite by moderating your blood sugar levels.

Fiber-Rich Snacks for No Seconds

Almonds may be high in calories compared to "light" snacks, but they leave you feeling fuller so you consume fewer calories at other meals. When people added an extra 1 1/2 ounces of almonds to their daily meals, they maintained their weight because they naturally ate fewer calories at other meals, states a study published in a 2013 issue of the "European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.” Popcorn may have an even greater fullness effect. In fact, a snack of popcorn was more satisfying than pretzels, party mix or almonds, according to a study published in "The FASEB Journal" in 2012. The researchers suggest this is because of popcorn's whole grain and fiber content.

Protein Power

Protein-rich foods increase your feelings of fullness, which may be why diets higher in protein can be successful in helping you lose weight. Increasing your intake of protein daily from 15 percent to 30 percent results in a reduction in appetite that can lead to significant weight loss, reported a study published in a 2005 issue of the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Whey protein, a derivative of milk sold in powdered form and added to recipes, may be particularly effective in suppressing your appetite. In a 2010 issue of the "British Journal of Nutrition," a study showed that whey protein consumed four hours before an unlimited buffet led to fewer calories consumed when compared to tuna, egg or turkey meals.

How to Lose Belly Fat Eating Foods that Burn Fat

The most effortless means to shake off belly fat is to begin consuming foods that can help burn fat. But consuming fat burning foods should be combined with every day workout to make sure that you will appreciate how it is to eat to lose belly fat.

It is extremely important that you should drink plenty of water, particularly if you are trying to shake off belly fat. Your body cannot perform very well if you will not drink sufficient amount of water. The required daily intake of water is approximately eight glasses.

Tip #2: Eat apples.

As the old saying goes, an apple a day will keep the doctor away. You can now supplement it with an apple a day will keep the belly fat away! Research conducted showed that the pectin established in apples provides the ability to control the amount of fat your cells soak up.

Tip #3: Try oatmeal.

This is an exceptional example of whole grains that your body requires to burn belly or stomach fat. Aside from the fact that oatmeal is a whole grain, it is also rich in fiber and you already know that fiber can help get rid of the bulk of stuff from your intestines to make you healthy as well as to reduce belly fat accumulation.

Tip #4: Eat more fish.

It gives your body lean proteins as well as omega-3 essential fatty acids. However, if you are not fond of eating fish, you can substitute it with beans because the latter is also considered an outstanding source of protein. If you will deprive your body with the right amount of protein it needs, your body will not become a fat burning machine anymore.

Tip #5: Munch on carrots.

They are an excellent source of carotene, a type of vitamin A that factually washes out the fat and waste rapidly from your body. The carotene is converted into vitamin A as soon as it reaches your intestines, thus assisting when you want to accelerate your metabolism. The quicker your metabolism, the quicker your body will burn fat.

Tip #6: Know how fat-burning responses with food.

Lots of supplement manufacturers supply pills which claim to give a fat-burning effect. However, the research conducted showed that consuming whole foods on a regular basis is more efficient in triggering the fat burning procedure as well as when intensifying metabolism. Foods containing elevated amounts of protein have the ability to burn approximately 1/3 of the contained calories throughout the absorption procedure, thus helping you burn extra calories effectively than amassing them as body fat.

Tip #7: Recognize lean protein’s role as a fat burner.

Lean proteins which include chicken, lean cuts of pork, beef as well as non-oily fish like canned tuna and tilapia are considered as the largest contributors to the rise of body temperature thus they need the majority of calories to absorb. These types of protein can support a sense of completeness so that you will no longer crave to have snacks during the day. They also help control the blood sugar level thus leading to depleted body fat levels and storage.

Eating foods that burn fat will surely lead you to a smaller belly, something that you have always dreamed of. Start gradually until such time that your body will be able to adapt to the new regimen.

How to Use 6 Fat Fighting Foods

Shaking off extra pounds does not imply denying consumption of particular types of foods or radically lessening your calorie consumption. You merely have to become aware of the kinds of foods you consume. As a matter of fact, there are foods that can really be of advantage to your weight loss and will combat fat accumulation. These foods will help you feel satiated, prevent fat buildup as well as accelerate your metabolism. Learn more about fat fighting foods through this page.

Tip #1: Chill with hot peppers.

Highly spiced foods like Habaneros, cayennes and jalapenos include capsaicin, the one that provides heat to the peppers. Once they are consumed, capsaicin accelerates your heart tempo as well as enhances your metabolism so that you can burn calories established from fat. Capsaicin works up to three hours following eating it. Calorie as well as food restraints can delay your metabolism, particularly if you are on a diet. Consuming spicy snacks can again accelerate the metabolism.

Tip #2: Enjoy your turkey dish.

Among animal sources of protein, turkey is the type of meat considered to contain the slightest quantity of calories for every ounce. Turkey possesses leucin, a type of amino acid that conserves muscle tissue once you shake off weight. Muscle tissue helps in fat burning because when you have extra muscles, the more you will burn fat. Turkey as well as other animal protein sources, as a whole, allows your body to utilize additional energy to absorb them in contrast to fat and carbohydrates. As a result, you will become satiated for a lengthy period while burning additional calories.

Tip #3: Munch on whole-grain cereals and milk.

Consuming whole-grain cereals that contain milk during breakfast is an excellent onset to your day. One bowl of cereal is digested gradually inside your stomach and as a result does not run through the amount of your insulin. Consuming foods such as bagels and muffins can soar up your insulin levels as well as result to amassed fat while your metabolism decelerates. The calcium content of milk assists your body to burn fat effectively. If you do not have sufficient calcium in your diet, your body will be instigated to discharge hormone known as calcitriol, which accelerates fat storage.

Tip #4: Eat nuts and fish.

If you do not want to interfere with your diet, you can munch almonds or walnuts once you yearn for a snack because they can make you feel satisfied. Almonds have alpha-linolenic acid, which accelerates the metabolism of fat. Walnuts have omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, tuna and sardines. The omega-3 fatty acids put off starvation as well as optimistically manipulate leptin within your body. Leptin is a type of hormone that agrees on whether food should be burned or amassed as fat.

Tip #5: Ingest water containing lemon.

You can shake off approximately three pounds each year by keeping away from sweetened sodas. As a substitute, just drink water with lemon juice. This type of drink will help cleanse your liver.

Tip #6: Include flax seed in your diet.

Crushed flax seed and consume two tablespoons of it daily or place it in your shakes, salads or as toppings to vegetables. Flax seed calms down your blood glucose and will keep you from overindulging.

There are plenty of options you can make use of when it comes to the need to fight fat. Your fat fighting foods such as those listed above will surely be a good help to your regimen.

6 Foods You Absolutely Need To Avoid If You Suffer From a Thyroid Disorder

If you are diagnosed with a thyroid condition or you fear you have the symptoms of one, be sure you avoid these 6 foods because a thyroid disorder can have a significant impact on your energy, weight and overall health.

Sugar

Maintaining proper blood sugar levels by avoiding products that contain refined sugar is of vital importance, especially if you are suffering from autoimmune thyroid disease. In fact, these sugary foods can severely affect your pancreatic function, thus leading to insulin resistance, which in turn can harm your thyroid. This can also significantly reduce your hormone levels. When it comes to sugar, it’s important to bear in mind that less is more.

Fried Foods

If you are already taking thyroid hormone replacement medications, foods with high amounts of trans fats can seriously obstruct their effectiveness. These foods can also have a negative impact on the natural production of thyroid hormone in your body.

As mentioned above, fried foods are abundant in trans-fat, so if you are taking thyroid medication, be really careful of how much fried food you eat in one day. In fact, some medical practitioners recommend cutting out fried foods from your diet.

Soy

Soy can be consumed, but only moderately. This could inhibit your body’s absorption of the treatment in case you’ve been treating hypothyroidism with synthetic thyroid hormone.

It’s recommended to wait for at least four hours after taking thyroid medication to consume soy so that you allow enough time for your body to metabolize each substance individually. This is also true of some nutritional supplements, including magnesium and calcium pills as well as antacids containing aluminum hydroxide or calcium. Moreover, those affected with an iodine deficiency can even experience decreased thyroid function due to the isoflavones in soy.
Cruciferous Veggies
Although cruciferous vegetables are essential for any healthy diet, these are best avoided in case you’re treating a thyroid condition, at least for a while. Other healthy vegetables can step in during this time.

This however is only a possible concern when dealing with an iodine deficiency and when cruciferous veggies take a significant part in your diet. So, provided you include a variety of nutriments in your diet that provide all the nutrients you need, your daily broccoli intake is nothing to be worried about.

Coffee

Coffee should be your last choice for a morning refresher if your thyroid health is an issue. Although moderate amounts of coffee consumed daily are nothing of concern, excessive coffee intake can seriously affect your adrenal glands, which in turn causes a number of different thyroid conditions and adrenal fatigue. What happens when you drink coffee is that your adrenal glands release the epinephrine and norepinephrine hormones. If you took up this habit of drinking coffee excessively at a young age, this could be the right time for you to start cutting back.

Gluten

As gluten contains gliadin, a protein which is foreign to the human body, your thyroid health is always at risk when consuming foods with gluten. Your thyroid has an enzyme which is very similar to gliadin – transglutaminase. So when you consume gluten, your immune system triggers an attack response on gliadin and on the similar enzyme in your thyroid. In fact, your thyroid can suffer damage for approximately six months after you consume gluten. In case of an autoimmune thyroid disease, regular screening for Celiac disease and gluten intolerance is highly recommended.

Whatever your food choices, have in mind that keeping your thyroid healthy is of vital importance for your overall health. Although some of the foods given here, like fried foods, are generally considered unhealthy and are best avoided whenever possible, other foods, such as cabbage, provide more health benefits than risks.

If you really want to maintain your quality of life, it’s important to incorporate your thyroid health into an approach to overall health as this will give you the right balance of all the nutrients you need while cutting down or cutting out foods that could really damage your health.

10 Surprising Flat-Belly Foods

Do you want to go from a FAT belly to a FLAT belly? Abdominal bloating or carrying unwanted weight around your midsection is often uncomfortable and embarrassing. To differentiate between the two, bloating is temporary abdominal distention that can be caused by a reaction to certain foods, lifestyle factors or a medical condition, such as liver or heart disease. Belly bloat is really intestinal gas, not excess fat. However, if you are overweight and want to flatten your belly for the long term, the only solution is to lose weight. Whether it’s gas or excess weight causing you tummy trouble, what you choose to put on your fork can help or hinder your goal of getting a flat belly. Read on to learn about 10 flat-belly foods to get you those lean abs you crave.

1. Fennel Seeds - is a pleasant-smelling herb with yellow flowers and feathery leaves. The name comes from the Roman word meaning “fragrant hay,” and it has a faint anise or licorice flavor and aroma. Dried fennel seeds are very nutritious, containing fiber, magnesium, calcium and iron, and they have long been used as a digestive aid. “Fennel helps to relax the GI [gastrointestinal] muscles, which helps trapped gas pass to alleviate bloating,” says Cynthia Sass, RDN, author of “S.A.S.S! Yourself Slim: Conquer Cravings, Drop Pounds and Lose Inches.” Sass recommends people chew on half a teaspoon of seeds after a meal or when their stomach feels distended due to gas buildup. “Or make a simple tea: Add a teaspoon of seeds to a cup of hot water, let steep for five minutes, strain out the seeds and sip,” Sass advises.

2. Salmon - Salmon packs a double punch when it comes to battling belly fat because it contains both omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D. Salmon is an excellent source of vitamin D, with wild salmon providing about four times the amount of vitamin D as farmed salmon. Insufficient blood levels of vitamin D have been linked to obesity, including abdominal obesity. Scientists are not sure if the reason for this is that vitamin D gets trapped in the fat cells of obese people or if obese people don’t consume enough vitamin D. Either way, getting adequate vitamin D is essential for good health. The omega-3 fatty acids in salmon and other fatty fish can also help flatten your belly. Researchers believe omega-3 fatty acids may alter the expression of certain genes, shifting your body to burn fat rather than store it.

3. Eggs - If you want to lose some fat around the middle, eggs are a great way to start your day. Eggs are packed with protein, and eating them for breakfast provides staying power. A study published in Nutrition Research found that people who eat eggs for breakfast were less likely to overeat the rest of the day. Eggs also provide a myriad other nutrients to help keep your tummy trim. For example, they’re a good source of vitamin B12, a nutrient that helps your body break down fat cells. Eggs also provide the power nutrient, vitamin D. Insufficient blood levels of vitamin D have been linked to obesity, including abdominal obesity. Choline, another power nutrient in eggs, is known for playing a role in fat metabolism. Since the majority of these nutrients are found in the egg yolk, be sure to eat the whole egg for the most nutrition. If you are worried about the cholesterol in the yolk, a 2008 report from the ongoing Physicians’ Health Study supports the idea that eating an egg a day is generally safe for the heart. But talk to your doctor to determine what is best for you.

4. Olive Oil - Healthful monounsaturated fats found in olive oil could potentially switch on genes related to the burning and storage of fat. Monounsaturated fats also help control blood sugar levels, which play a key role in keeping hunger at bay and reducing fat accumulation around the midsection. A study in Diabetes Care showed that partial replacement of complex digestible carbohydrates with monounsaturated fatty acids in the diet of those with Type 2 diabetes helped maintain blood sugar levels and improve blood lipids. Dietary fat also increases satiety, which may help cut down overall calorie intake. Before you pour olive oil all over your food in the hopes of a slimmer waistline, keep in mind that a serving size of olive oil is one tablespoon, which has 120 calories.

5. Asparagus - While all green vegetables are low-calorie nutrient superstars that promote a healthy weight, asparagus serves triple duty in its anti-bloating effects. “First, it’s a source of prebiotics, which support the growth of ‘good’ bacteria to help maintain a healthy balance in the digestive system to prevent and/or reduce gas. It also contains soluble and insoluble fiber to promote overall digestive health as well as natural anti-inflammatory substances to reduce GI irritation,” says Cynthia Sass, RDN. To reduce belly bloat, eat steamed asparagus a few times a week. For an additional flat-belly boost, lightly drizzle your asparagus with olive oil.

6. Whole Grains Whole grains -- including quinoa, popcorn, oats and wheat -- can help flatten your stomach. A study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that people who eat whole grains lose more abdominal fat than those who don’t. The tummy-tucking powers of whole grains likely come from the fiber content. Fiber aids in keeping insulin levels low, which may help shrink fat cells. Whole grains also provide vitamins, minerals and antioxidants for good health. Check the package label to make sure a product is made with whole grains. The first ingredient listed should contain the word “whole” (such as “whole wheat” or “whole oats”). The USDA recommends healthy adults consume about six ounces of total grains per day, and that at least half of those grains should be whole grains.

7. Bananas Although many people think bananas are fattening, they are actually an important flat-belly food. “Foods rich in potassium help de-bloat the belly by acting as a natural diuretic, triggering the release of excess sodium and water the body is retaining. The soluble fiber in bananas can also help relieve or prevent constipation, which can be a major cause of a belly pooch,” says Cynthia Sass, RDN. Grab a banana as a daily snack, or whip one into a smoothie. Other foods high in potassium to help fight belly bloat include sweet potatoes, nuts, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables and dates.

8. Greek Yogurt - Yogurt is a good source of calcium, a mineral that slows production of the hormone cortisol, which encourages belly fat. While less than regular yogurt, Greek yogurt still has about 20 percent of your daily calcium needs. Another great benefit of Greek yogurt is that it provides twice the filling protein for weight control as compared to regular yogurt, and it may be easier on the gut than other dairy foods. “Dairy foods are the cause of GI woes for many, particularly gas and bloating. Greek yogurt, however, contains active cultures -- or ‘good’ bacteria -- that aid in digestion and prevent gas and bloating. It also contains less lactose than regular yogurt due to the straining process, so those who are lactose intolerant may be able to avoid some of those negative issues with Greek yogurt.

9. Cucumbers - Cucumbers are loaded with water and naturally low in calories to help with hydration and weight management. One whole cucumber has just 45 calories. If you are feeling bloated, cucumbers can help with that too. “People use cucumbers to reduce puffiness under the eyes, and eating them can also help you fight belly bloat. Cucumbers have been shown to inhibit the activity of pro-inflammatory enzymes, which can help reduce GI swelling,” says Cynthia Sass, RDN. For flatter abs, eat cucumbers daily as a snack or add them to a salad or sandwich.

10. Water Drinking enough water supports the other ways you’re trying to flatten your stomach. “Many people know that fiber-rich foods are good for a flat belly because they help to move food and waste through the GI system, preventing constipation and bloat. However, we often forget about the water part of the equation. Water is essential for moving fiber through the GI system and preventing constipation. Everyone’s water needs are different. Eight glasses a day is a general rule of thumb for adults, but you may need more or less depending on the environment where you live and how active you are,” says Rachel Begun, M.S., RDN, a food and nutrition consultant in Boulder, Colorado. The Institute of Medicine recommends 91 ounces per day for women (or about 11.4 cups) and for men, 125 ounces per day (or about 15.6 cups) of water from all beverages and foods. A good way to determine know if you’re drinking enough water is to check the color of your urine -- the clearer the better. Since fizzy water can cause bloating, choose flat water and switch up the taste with slices of lemon, lime, cucumber or fresh peppermint leaves.

7 Cancer Causing Foods You Should Stop Eating

1. Microwave Popcorn

Many people enjoy eating popcorn while watching their favorite movie. However, it is a much better and healthier option to make your own popcorn at home in ghee or coconut oil. By this you can turn popcorns into e healthy snack but only if you are using organic popcorn kernels. Also, you should avoid buying popcorn at the movie theaters because they contain buttering agent which is a possible cancer-former.

Cancer-Causing Agent: Perfluorooctanoic acid is created during the microwave process from substances found on the inside of the bags.

2. Beef Jerky

This snack contains nitrites which can lead to the development of cancer. These substances are found in many other foods but beef jerky has much more of them per ounce than many other foods.

Therefore, you should make your own beef jerky using grass-fed ground beef rolled out thin using a rolling pin, and baked in the oven for hours at the lowest temperature.

Cancer-Causing Agent: Nitrites found in beef jerky are associated with cancer development, and they are added to give the jerky its color and also to keep it fresh for months.

3. Canned Foods

It has been long discussed whether BPAs contained in canned foods can cause cancer and whether these substances are transferred to the food that the cans contain. Therefore, you should opt for fresh or frozen food, or buy canned food which is BPA-free.

Cancer-Causing Agent: Bisphenol-A .

GMO treated food contains herbicides and pesticides which have been shown to cause cancer and lead to development of many other diseases. These chemicals cannot be rinsed off before eating. Try to consume 100% organic foods, or the food that has the “Non-GMO Project Verified” seal on it to make sure your food is GMO free.

Cancer-Causing Agent: herbicides and pesticides.

5. Cola

Cola contains High Fructose Corn Syrup which gives the soda its brown color. This chemical has proven to feed the cancer cells that you currently have in your body.

Cancer-Causing Agent: 4-MI (4-methylimidazole) which is directly linked to cancer development in thousands of individuals.

6. Diet Foods

Generally, diet foods contain artificial sweeteners which are associated with cancer development. Moreover, these substances have toxic effect on the body.

Cancer-Causing Agent: Aspartame which is the most commonly used artificial sweetener and it has been linked to cancer development for years. However, FDA claims that there is no sufficient evidence to support this theory.

7. Fried Snacks

Fried snacks are absolutely delicious, but carcinogenic as well. These snacks have previously been deep fried, just like French fries, in order to make it crispy . During this process there is a formation of cancer-causing substances which eventually we consume.

Cancer-Causing Agent: Glycidamide, a metabolic product of Acrylamide, a substance produces from frying foods at high temperatures. This substance is considered as highly carcinogenic.

List of Low-Fat, Low Salt & Low Cholesterol Foods

A diet that is low in fat, salt and cholesterol is considered heart healthy. You should consume less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol -- which comes from animal fat -- daily, advises the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010. Likewise limit trans fat to 1 percent of daily calories and saturated fat to 7 percent. The American Heart Association recommends 1,500 milligrams per day of sodium, or roughly 3/4 of a teaspoon. Many foods are low in cholesterol, salt and fat.

Fruits and Veggies

Fresh vegetables and fruits are low in calories, sodium and cholesterol. Produce also does not have cholesterol, saturated fat or trans fat, according to “American Dietetic Association Low-Salt Cookbook.” These foods tend to be high in vitamins as well. There are a few exceptions -- olives, coconuts and avocados, which all are high in fat. If you purchase frozen fruits or veggies, check labels to ensure the product doesn’t have added sugar, salt or butter. If you’re on a low-salt diet, avoid veggies packed in brine because they’ll be high in sodium.

Fat Free Dairy

Fat free milk is low in calories, fat and cholesterol. Seek milk products such as cheese and sour cream that are marked both fat free and low sodium, recommends the American Heart Association. According to Ohio State University, you may use 1 percent milk products on a low-fat, low-cholesterol and low-sodium diet meant to boost heart health, but you must avoid 2 percent milk products.

Fish

Fish are generally low in calories, fat and cholesterol. However, you need to be cautious in preparing fish so you don’t add undesired fat and calories to it, according to Ohio State University. Broil, bake, grill or poach your fish for best results. The fish that do have a higher fat content, including salmon, have omega-3 fatty acids. Such fats are heart healthy, prompting recommendations to eat fish three times weekly.

Herbs and Spices

Herbs and spices are low in fat, calories and cholesterol. In fact, if you are trying to cut calories and salt from your diet to improve heart health, herbs are a good way to add flavor to your food, recommends Ohio State University. For example, ginger is good in fruits and chicken; thyme adds flavor to lean meats, sauces and soups; turmeric is good on fish and rice; cinnamon enhances the flavor of fruit; and dried mustard is good on a variety of meats and poultry, salads, broccoli and cabbage and in sauces, according to the American Heart Association.

Foods to Avoid on the Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet was developed in 1972 By Robert Atkins. He discovered a way that someone can eat strictly cheeses, meats and their byproducts and lose weight. The only catch is that the dieter initially restrict their carbohydrate intake and then gradually begin to add good carbs. There are four main phases of the Atkins diet---induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance. The goal is to initially get the body into a state of ketosis in which the body begins to burn its own fat for fuel. For the diet to work properly, there are some foods to avoid.

Starches

Foods that are starchy and high in carbohydrates should be completely avoided in most phases of the Atkins diet. These include rice, pastas, whole grains and beans. Most of these foods contain a total carbohydrate count of over 20g per serving. In the beginning of the Atkins diet, dieters are not allowed to have more than 20g of carbs for the entire day. The reason for eliminating starches is that it raises the body's glycemic index and leads to unstable blood sugar levels.

Vegetables

Vegetables are always a healthy choice. With the beginning stages of the Atkins diet, including induction and ongoing weight loss, vegetables should be eaten in extreme moderation---still under 20g per day. Even at a low carb intake, there are still some to avoid completely on the Atkins diet. These include cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, onion, avocado, collard greens, bamboo shoots, okra, beets, water chestnuts, wax beans, spinach, carrots and celery.

Processed Foods

Processed foods should be avoided completely when on the Atkins diet---except for the Atkins brand of packaged foods and snacks. Processed foods are generally high in sugars, fat and starches. Examples of processed foods to avoid may include potato chips, cookies, candies, ice cream and crackers. Breaded foods should also be avoided. They include sugars, flours and starches that will halt the fat-burning process. Examples of this may be deep-fried breaded chicken, corn dogs and breaded vegetables.

Breads

Breads are not acceptable at any point in the Atkins phase. There are some Atkins-approved breads that are made from flax seed and other ingredients that can be substituted for flour and whole grain breads---but they should be consumed in moderation as part of ongoing weight loss. Breads including white, whole wheat, muffins, cupcakes and cakes should all be avoided throughout the Atkins plan.

Sugars

Sugar cravings are what the diet is designed to combat and ward off. The diet is based on helping the dieter curb his addiction to sugar and simple carbohydrates. While the diet plan itself tells the dieter not to look at sugar count---just the carb count, sugars should mainly be avoided. Sugared sodas and juice can be substituted for diet soda, tea and coffee. Instead of reaching for a slice of cherry pie, a sugar-free jello makes a wise substitution because it contains no carbs.
